Inside the Mind of a Terrorist

Consequences of the attack

How was the region or world changed as a result, politically and economically?
The Bali bombings was the deadliest act of terrorism in the history of Indonesia, it killed 202 people and injured 209 coming from 24 different countries. Australians, Germans, Canadians, Swedes and Indonesians died in the blast. The bomb was so powerful it left a crater at the entrance of the nightclub and the force of the explosion damaged a hotel 1km away.  As most of the immediate medical needs were met officials began to focus on the clean up and restoration of the vital functions of community. The Bali bombings affected more than just victims, the Bali community struggled to regain some sense of stability and normality. One of the many important concerns created by the Bali bombings is the effect on the Indonesian economy. The most obvious effect is the damage to tourism on the island of Bali. Bali is one of the less developed regions of Indonesia and is greatly dependent on providing jobs. Bali accounts for about 40 per cent of Indonesia's earnings from tourism, which last year earned $US 5.4 billion in foreign exchange. Bali was not only affected economically but was also affected politically. The bombings intensified US pressure on Indonesia to crack down on militant Islamic groups in the country whom were alleged to have links with a series of planned or executed bomb attacks throughout the Southeast Asian region. Bali had no operational crisis management prior to the attack now they have a plan which incorporates awareness, planning response and recovery and also security, regional stability and available emergency procedures.

Nature of the Attack

Impact on the community, how it was carried out, reasons why it was carried out, responses
Victims
The terrorist attack occurred on October 12th 2002 in the popular tourist resort Kuta. Tourists were happily clubbing and having fun, at 11:05 pm a suicide bomber inside Paddy’s Bar detonated a bomb which he was carrying in his backpack, the suicide bomber was killed outright. Many people were injured by the blast, as people panicked and ran onto the street they were unaware they were heading for more danger. Minutes later additional explosions were let off outside the Sari club directly opposite Paddy’s Bar. The bomb outside the Sari Club had been hidden inside a white Mitsubishi van and was set off by remote control from outside the club. The blast caused gas cylinders to explode, creating a huge fireball which caused the flimsy roof structure to collapse and leave hundreds trapped inside. Residents rushed to help people who were walking around covered in blood and severely burned with their skin hanging off. People’s body parts were blown across the street it was a terrible sight. The injured were carried to Sanglan hospital to be treated however the hospital was too small and ill-equipped to deal with the scale of disaster which they had in their hands. Victims had to be flown to Darwin and Perth for specialist burn treatment. The main priority was to respond to emergency and keep losses to a minimum, this included search and rescue efforts, locating and bringing survivors to safety. Volunteers from all sectors of society including tourists made themselves available to hospitals to help in tasks such as nursing and comforting wounded. So the question is why did they target these popular tourist bars? Their motive was to exterminate as many US citizens as they could so they planned to hit small targets like nightclubs and bars rather than the usual high profile foreign embassies.

Significant cultural elements

Bali’s Sari club and Paddy’s bar were a major terrorist target as the bombers knew that their prime targets often visited these popular night life spots. The terrorist’s wanted to target the Americans to defend the people of Afghanistan as USA was seen as embodying the anti-Islamic struggle of the Christian and Jewish dominated Western World so they wanted to terrorise the American Government.  A Bomber said “I hate American’s because it’s the real centre of International terrorism which has already repeatedly tyramised Isbar, I carry out Jihad he declared because it’s the duty of Muslims to avenge so the American terrorists and their allies understand that the blood of the Muslim community isn’t shed for nothing”. However their plan failed as the desired target hit far more Australians and Indonesians than Americans.

Group Who has claimed or is credited with responsibility for attacks

Map of where attack occured
The terrorist group whom are responsible for the horrific Bali bombings are known as Jemaah Islamiyah. They are an Islamic group who portray themselves as high-minded warriors acting according to the demands of their faith. In relation to the Bali bombings these terrorists believe they have not done anything barbaric which is prohibited from God.
One of the main terrorists involved in the Bali Bombings is Abu Bakor Bashir who is the leader of the Indonesian Mujahedeen council and is renown for his outspokenness against Indonesian Government. Abu is known to be the spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah organization and is said to be a deep philosopher who inspires fatal actions. Abu received a short sentence due to the lack of evidence presented. A terrorist by the name Ali Imron publicly admitted his role in the Bali Bombing attacks and demonstrated exactly how they were carried out. He also claimed these attacks were carried out in the name of God.
